Edge computing is a significant driver and critical enabler for digital transformation projects. Firms agree that edge capture has become an integral part of edge computing, offering similar advantages.

The primary guiding principle behind the digital transformation initiatives is to achieve efficiency with the business workflows. Any additional step in the data processing or delays in the processing of digital inputs is likely to cause a negative impact. This challenge is amplified by an explosion volume of business inputs from new sources, including the IoT devices.

Edge computing solutions facilitate data processing at the business data origin to reduce the steps of data handling subsequently, increasing workflow efficiency. The cloud continues to be used to manage IoT devices and to analyze large datasets in the use cases where immediate action is not imperative.

The new paradigm of “processing anywhere“refers to the data being processed where it originates and gets ingested into workflows aligning with the business requirements. Edge computing will alter the way businesses interact with the physical world. Whether one considers it evolutionary or revolutionary, it is well on the way to mainstream adoption.

According to Gartner, almost 10% of enterprise-generated data is generated and processed outside a traditional centralized data cloud or center. By 2025, Gartner predicts this figure to shoot up to 75%.

The explosive growth of data and inputs generated by IoT devices has put significant data discussions in a different light. As business needs are changing, starting with the accelerated pace of business workflows and the need for quick responses.

Edge computing addresses the requirement for real data processing that is performed where the data resides. This is driven by two significant factors – latency or the cost of time, and the cost of transport or bandwidth. Entrepreneurs agree that bandwidth and latency issues continue as the major hurdles for the processing of transactional data and other related data analysis. High-volume data and low latency processing are the two key pillars to realize the promise of edge computing. Edge computing eliminates distance-induced latency and acts as the facilitator for a new breed of strategic applications during the adoption of evolving IT infrastructures.

Edge computing has a logical synergy with information and document capture. The dynamics in the capture market are expected to show similar trends. Document capture started as a mostly centralized process. The underlying trend is to capture business documents at their “first point of contact” with an organization. Document scanner architecture has adapted to achieve the need to analyze and process at paper-based data points of origin, enabling edge capture. Edge capture has become an integral part of edge computing, offering similar advantages.
