Cloud adoption has recorded a steady increase since 2014. However, 2019 saw the highest adoption rate, according to a recent Bitglass report. The report revealed that 86% of enterprises had implemented cloud-based tools. At the same time, some companies are lagging in applying basic cloud security tools. The report titled ‘A for Adoption: Bitglass’ 2019 Cloud Adoption Report’ revealed that only 34% of organizations had implemented single sign-on (SSO), which is one of the most basic yet crucial cloud security tools.
The report was prepared to determine the overall growth rates and trends in cloud adoptions. A total of 138,000 companies worldwide were surveyed to prepare the report. Lauren Nelson, a research director at Forrester, said that one of the reasons more and more business professionals have adopted the technology is because the cloud is fast and relatively inexpensive to try. Thanks to the increase in cloud technology adoption, there has been a substantial rise in IoT, ML, and AI. There has been an increase in the popularity of cloud applications across industries. The report revealed that around 81% of organizations in the education vertical are accessing cloud apps, while 80% of them are technology companies.
As per the report, single sign-on (SSO) is one of the most popular cloud security tools. It is one of the most basic cloud security tools, and enterprises from all the major industries are failing to adopt it. Around 60% of companies from the education industry have implemented SSO. Meanwhile, only one-third of the companies from the technology industry have taken this security tool. Healthcare and finance organizations followed with 30% and 41% respectively.
Mary Ruddy, research vice president at Gartner, said in a brief to the reports by the research firm,” one of the hindrances to implementing SSO is that several organizations have an array of legacy apps that don’t support modern identity protocols such as SAML, OAuth and OpenID Connect”. Hence, enterprises need to implement multiple SSO technologies to keep in line with their SSO goals. The report further added that it is becoming essential for security professionals to gain knowledge about basic security tools such as SSO and implement them accordingly into their businesses.

With the widespread adoption of cloud functionality, security teams need to ramp up their understanding of cloud security and learn the latest cloud security strategies. Nelson suggested that companies need to allot a dedicated workforce to take care of specific cloud security tools. They also should take measures to provide education and outreach to the security team to build better relationships with business and development teams.
