Enterprise service mesh company Tetrate announced today that Sanjay Poonen will serve as the company’s strategic advisor. Tetrate was founded by the creators and maintainers of the Istio and Envoy projects. Poonen is a seasoned high-tech executive with extensive experience in product innovation and assisting multi-billion dollar businesses to enter and scale.
Previously, Poonen served as VMware’s chief operating officer, leading the company’s significant revenue growth from $6 billion to $12 billion, while leading VMware’s multi-cloud deals with AWS, Microsoft, Google and more. He also manages the company’s security and end-user computing businesses. Prior to VMware, Poonen served as president of SAP, leading the applications, industry and platform solutions and sales teams, driving the company’s business from $10 billion to $20 billion, including the fastest $1 billion in revenue in SAP history product – HANA. Before joining SAP, Poonen held senior executive positions at Symantec and Informatica. He started his career as a software engineer at Microsoft and Apple. Poonen holds multiple patents, holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, and holds a Baker Scholar honor from Harvard Business School. He also holds an MS in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University and a BS in Computer Science and Engineering/Mathematics from Dartmouth University, cum laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
