CISA, the US government’s cybersecurity agency, has unveiled a new Hardware Bill of Materials (HBOM) framework that provides a consistent, repeatable way for vendors to communicate with purchasers about hardware components in physical products.
The new framework offers what CISA calls “a reliable and predictable structure for HBOMs,” in addition to a number of precisely defined data fields of HBOM constituents and their attributes. According to Mona Harrington, assistant director of CISA, “Organizations can protect against economic and security risks, enhancing overall resilience, with standardized naming, thorough information, and clear guidance.”
According to CISA, the framework outlines a format that can be used to ensure uniformity among HBOMs and to make it easier for vendors and buyers to produce and use HBOMs.
