A recent distributed denial of service (DDoS) campaign targeting a hotel customer of cloud networking provider Akamai has been claimed by the defunct REvil ransomware gang.
According to analysts, it’s extremely likely that the attack is not a rebirth of the known cybercriminal gang, but rather a copycat operation. According to an Akamai blog post published Wednesday, researchers have been watching the DDoS attack since May 12, when a customer alerted the company’s Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) of an attempted attack by a group claiming to be affiliated with REvil.
The DDoS effort also appears to have a political objective, which contrasts with REvil’s earlier tactics, in which the group stated it was only motivated by financial gain.
