A Layer 7 distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that peaked at 46 million requests per second (RPS) was mitigated by Google in June 2022. This week’s disclosure of a third HTTPS attack this year that affected tens of millions of RPS follows the mitigation of two earlier, lower-volume attacks by Cloudflare.
Cloudflare reported that the first one peaked at 15.3 million RPS in April and that the second one reached 26 million RPS in June. Given that it was about 76% larger than the previous record, the attack that Google disclosed this week clearly outweighs the previously disclosed incidents.
Google reports that 5,256 source IPs from 132 different countries were the origin of the attack, with the top 4 countries accounting for 31% of all traffic.
