Google has agreed to delete billions of records containing personal information collected from over 136 million people in the United States who used its Chrome web browser to access the internet.
The massive housecleaning is part of a settlement in a lawsuit alleging illegal surveillance by the search giant. The terms of the agreement were revealed in a court filing Monday, more than three months after Google and the attorneys handling the class-action case announced they had settled a June 2020 lawsuit challenging Chrome’s privacy controls.
Google fought the lawsuit until last August, when U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers denied a request to dismiss the case, setting up a potential trial.
