The personal information of hundreds of millions of Chinese individuals is allegedly being sold online by a hacker.
The hacker published a sample of 750,000 items online, including names, mobile numbers, national ID numbers, residences, birthdays, and police complaints submitted by individuals. The authenticity of some of the citizen data in the sample has been confirmed by the AFP and cybersecurity specialists, but it is difficult to estimate the size of the complete database.
The 23-terabyte database, which the hacker claims has the records of a billion Chinese individuals, was advertised on a forum late last month but wasn’t discovered until this week by cybersecurity specialists.
