During this pandemic, the healthcare industry is being constantly plagued by a myriad of cybersecurity-related issues. Recently, a new malware family strain has risen in Canada, targeting Android users and locking up personal videos and photos.
When Health Canada launched its tracing app against coronavirus spread, the CryCryptor malware operators started doing rounds to hack it. The ransomware was traced back to GitHub soon after its source code, named as CryDroid, was publicized on 11 June.
The malware was actively propagating through two different bogus websites tracershield[.]ca) and (covid19tracer[.]ca. Once gained access, the malware encrypted targeted files by adding extensions and removed the original files from the infected computer.
