According to a new analysis from cybersecurity firm WizCase, more than 1,000 GB of data and over 1.6 million files from hundreds of municipalities in the United States were left exposed.
All of the towns and cities appeared to be linked by one product, which is owned by PeopleGIS, a Massachusetts firm. Local governments in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut use the company’s information management software.
More than 80 misconfigured Amazon S3 buckets containing data pertaining to these towns were identified by Ata Hakçl and his team. The data included everything from deeds and tax documents to company licenses and job applications for government positions.
