Merck Settles NotPetya Insurance Claim, Leaving Cyberwar Definition Unresolved

A settlement between Pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. Inc. and its insurers over damage caused by NotPetya has avoided a legal definition of cyberwar and its relationship with kinetic war.

In 2017, Merck filed an insurance claim totaling USD 1.4 billion for harm brought on by the NotPetya malware attack. Merck filed a claim under its “all-risks” coverage even though it lacked cyber insurance. It was claimed that Russia was behind NotPetya as part of an attempt to attack Ukraine. The majority of people believed that this was a cyberattack against Ukraine.

Its impact spread around the world, resulting in additional damage worth billions of dollars in what initially seems to be unintentional consequences of a cyberwar.
