Microsoft’s threat intelligence team discovered evidence of foreign government-backed hacking groups using OpenAI’s ChatGPT to automate malicious vulnerability research, target reconnaissance, and malware creation tasks.

Microsoft said in a research report that it collaborated with OpenAI to examine how malevolent actors use LLMs, and that it discovered several established APTs experimenting with the well-known ChatGPT tool to gather information about possible victims, enhance malware scripting tasks, and analyze public security advisories.

Although the study did not find any noteworthy attacks utilizing the tracked LLMs, Microsoft claimed to have discovered hacking groups from Iran, North Korea, China, Russia, and China utilizing LLMs in ongoing APT operations.
