Microsoft has recently announced the availability of the Application Guard for Office for public review. This feature is designed to guard users against malicious documents and data.
It is known initially as the “Microsoft Defender Application Guard for Office” and was available for private preview earlier. Now, the feature is currently disabled by default and accessible to people with a 365 E5/ 365 E5 Security license.
It helps in preventing ‘untrusted’ docs from accessing the trusted resources via potentially unsafe Office files. This is done in a secure container isolated with the help of hardware-based virtualization. Eric Wayne from Microsoft noted –“When Office opens files in Application Guard, users can securely read, edit, print, and save those files without having to re-open files outside the container.”
