Secureworks researchers have discovered a mysterious piece of malware that scans for nearby Wi-Fi access points in order to determine the location of the infected device.
The malware, known as Whiffy Recon, is created to scan for Wi-Fi every 60 seconds and targets Windows systems. The gathered Information is fed into a Google geolocation API, which triangulates the location based on Wi-Fi access point and mobile network data to produce geographic coordinates.
Threat actors might use the data to track compromised systems, according to Secureworks, and then use that Information to threaten or coerce victims into complying with their demands.
