Russian cyber operations targeting Ukraine and its allies are largely to blame for the rise in nation-state hacker attacks on critical infrastructure, according to Microsoft’s 2022 Digital Defense Report.
20% of all nation-state attacks that Microsoft tracked between June 2020 and June 2021 were directed at critical infrastructure. Between July 2021 and June 2022, that percentage increased to 40%. Additionally, espionage operations have increasingly targeted the United States and other Ukrainian allies, many of which are NATO nations.
