As a part of the coordinated international law enforcement campaign, the NetWalker ransomware network has been taken down. The nefarious software was previously used for targeting government agencies, hospitals, private sector organizations, schools, etc. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) was part of the campaign and has confirmed that one Canadian citizen has been charged with links to the previous NetWalker attacks.
Nicholas L. McQuaid, Acting Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division Justice Department, has said that the international campaign aims to strike back against the increasing threat of ransomware, disrupt the criminal activities, bring criminal charges against those involved, and recover the ransom payments wherever possible.
