An adversary could exploit a new set of serious vulnerabilities in the Realtek RTL8170C Wi-Fi module to gain elevated privileges on a device and hijack wireless communications.
Researchers from Israeli IoT security firm Vdoo warned in a write-up published recently that successful exploitation would result in complete control of the Wi-Fi module and probable root access to the embedded device’s OS (such as Linux or Android).
Ameba, an Arduino-compatible programmable platform with peripheral interfaces for constructing a variety of IoT applications by devices spanning the agriculture, industrial, automotive, security, energy, healthcare, and smart home sectors, is powered by the Realtek RTL8710C Wi-Fi SoC.
