‘Scattered Spider’ Cybercrime Group Targets Mobile Carriers via Telecom, BPO Firms

Security company CrowdStrike has warned that a threat actor known as “Scattered Spider” is targeting telecommunications and business process outsourcing (BPO) firms in an effort to hack into mobile carrier networks and perform SIM swapping.

Since June 2022, Scattered Spider, a financially motivated threat actor, has been seen increasingly focusing on the telecoms sector, setting up persistence mechanisms and even rolling back implemented mitigations to regain access to the compromised networks. Scattered Spider, according to CrowdStrike, has been obstinately attempting to access victim networks and, once in, typically goes about its daily business.

The threat actor was observed deploying remote monitoring and management (RMM) and virtual private network (VPN) tools.
