The two social media requests have requested the Australian government to consider deploying many of the elements available in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of Europe when they refresh the 33 years old Privacy Act of the country. Facebook has submitted a document to be reviewed by the Attorney-General for the Privacy Act 1988.
They have called for effective data and privacy protection as a segment of a globally harmonized framework. The organizations believe that by failing to make the changes, the risk of developing “splinternet” drastically increases. This is caused when privacy and data regulation policies are different in different countries.
