Industrial cybersecurity firm Dragos has emphasized the importance of acknowledging the presence of the recently uncovered CosmicEnergy malware, which specifically targets industrial control systems (ICS). While the malware does not currently pose an immediate danger to operational technology (OT), organizations should not overlook its significance.
In a report by Mandiant, a subsidiary of Google, CosmicEnergy was identified as a new form of malware capable of potentially disrupting electric grids. The malware’s primary function involves interacting with ICS devices utilized in electric transmission and distribution, enabling threat actors to remotely issue commands that can manipulate the actuation of power line switches and circuit breakers.
