Colonial Pipeline paid a ransom to the cybercriminals behind the DarkSide ransomware last month, and the Department of Justice revealed on Monday that it had recovered some of the money.
While this isn’t the first time the government has been able to reimburse victims, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said during a press conference that it was the first for the new Ransomware and Digital Extortion Task Force, which was established in April to address the rising number of cyber-attacks.
Despite paying the ransom, the encryption tools provided did not work or assist the company in restoring its systems.
