PeopleConnect-owned background check services Instant Checkmate and TruthFinder have disclosed data breaches affecting over 20 million users in total. The organizations informed users in their individual data breach notices published on February 3 that the incident was discovered after cybercriminals began sharing databases stolen from the two companies on darknet forums.
The databases, or “lists,” as the two businesses refer to them, are made up of information such as names, phone numbers, email addresses, encrypted passwords, and tokens for password resets that have either expired or are inactive.
“The team has verified that the list, which appears to include all customer accounts created between 2011 and 2019, was made a number of years ago. The published list was created within the organization”, according to the announcements.
