US authorities announced a ban Friday on the import or sale of communications equipment deemed “an unacceptable risk to national security” including gear from Chinese giants Huawei Technologies and ZTE.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had listed both businesses as potential threats, and the new regulations forbid the authorization of their equipment in the future. The action, which comes amid a protracted standoff between the two largest economies in the world, is the most recent in a series of steps taken to restrict Chinese telecom companies’ access to American networks.
