The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Security Agency (NSA) have published guidance on implementing an Open Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture.
Open Radio Access Network Security Considerations is a general-purpose guide that should be applicable across a range of industries. It is based on current research and best practices. According to the document, “Open RAN” refers to how traditional RAN architecture has evolved to include open, interoperable interfaces, virtualization, and intelligence powered by big data and artificial intelligence.
According to CISA and the NSA, an open RAN architecture facilitates cloudification and virtualization while fostering “increased competition, vendor diversity, and innovation” through the development of a multi-vendor ecosystem.
