The French data protection watchdog fined Yahoo 10 million euros. Yahoo was found guilty of disregarding users’ refusals of internet-tracking “cookies” and falsely threatening them with termination of their email accounts if they complied.
Following complaints and investigations conducted by the CNIL authority in October 2020 and June 2021, a fine of USD 10.9 million was imposed in December. It was discovered that even though users of the main Yahoo.com website clicked a button to reject cookies, about 20 digital trackers were still deposited for advertising purposes.
Furthermore, Yahoo Mail users were informed that they would lose access to messaging and other Yahoo services if they tried to withdraw their consent for cookies.
