Australian Contentious Encryption Laws were Utilized Eleven Times in One Year

Australia’s controversial encryption laws were used eleven times between 2019 and 2020 by three of the nation’s law enforcement groups.

It was unveiled in the Department of Home Affairs’ latest Telecommunications (Interception And Access) Act 1979 that the powers were used seven times by New South Wales Police, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) used it for three times, and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) had used it once.

All eleven cases were Technical Assistance Requests (TAR), which are voluntary requests for the selected communications providers in order to enhance their existing capabilities to access user communications.
