Cyber incidents regularly affect ports, vessels, shipping companies, and other maritime entities, as evidenced by a Dutch university’s maritime cyberattack database, which was launched last year. According to studies, many incidents involve operational technology (OT) systems.

Experts have warned that vulnerabilities in the maritime industry’s IT and OT systems could jeopardize supply chains and the global economy. The new executive order seeks to increase the DHS’s ability to directly address maritime cyber threats.
