Disruptive malware attacks on Ukrainian organizations (pretending to be ransomware attacks) are probably part of Russia’s broader attempt to undermine Ukrainian sovereignty, according to analysts.

Russia plans to invade Ukraine with a hot war in which Biden officials have warned, could happen “at any time” – but the country is already under attack in another sense. A major campaign for malware is still going on, with experts agreeing that it is aimed at permanently disrupting organizations across the country and painting Ukraine as a failed state. The cyberattack attack represents a systematic malware that has already affected a number of programs across the country, according to a warning from the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MCTIC) this week.

The hacker, Microsoft dubbed WhisperGate, has already been used against government programs, non-profit organizations, and IT companies in Ukraine, the report warns.
