Joe Biden Extends Executive Order Regarding Cyberattack Sanctions

President Biden has recently sent a letter to the Senate and the House of Representatives to extend an executive order on the sanctions issued related to cyber-attacks.

Issued in 2015 by Barack Obama, Executive Order 13694 enables authorities to block any property of entities engaged with significant malicious cyber-centric activities. The Trump administration had also extended this executive order from 2017 – 2020.

As per the President’s letter, “Significant malicious cyber-enabled activities originating from, or directed by persons located, in whole or in substantial part, outside the United States continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.”
