McAfee noted that a rush to provide more mobility for employees during the Covid-19 crisis has resulted in new security challenges. The company reported that attacks on Remote Desktop Protocols (RDP) increased by three-fold during March, and April, the number of RDP ports grew from 3 million in January, to 4.5 million in March.
Additionally, these present a major challenge to a region like the US, which experiences some of the highest costs in terms of data breaches. According to the data report, over one-third of new RDP ports came up in the US. According to McAfee’s report, over one-fifth of new users continue to use Windows 7, making them potentially even more vulnerable to growing threats.
