Microsoft Acquires ReFirm Labs to Improve IoT security

ReFirm Labs has been acquired by Microsoft as part of a larger effort to improve the security of Internet of Things devices. The deal’s terms were not disclosed.

Binwalk Open Source, a tool for identifying and extracting files and code from firmware images, was created by ReFirm’s team.

According to David Weston, director of enterprise and operating system security at Microsoft, the company’s technology plays an important role in IoT security by “bridging the gap that we have today between IT and OT … and that is making sure you can do basic things like vulnerability assessments and identifying missing patches and security issues on IoT devices.”
