Opera File Sharing Function Reveals Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

According to threat detection company Guardio Labs, there was a potential for remote code execution (RCE) due to a flaw in an Opera browser feature that allowed file sharing between devices.

By using Opera’s mobile application to scan a QR code, users can effortlessly transfer files and messages between desktop and mobile devices through the impacted feature, My Flow. Users are prompted with a chat-like interface after the code has been scanned, which makes it convenient for them to run the shared files right away but also puts them at risk for security issues.

Based on this theory, the security researchers at Guardio Labs began studying Opera’s development, architecture, and security protocols in order to find any vulnerabilities that might be used maliciously.
