After an up-and-coming cybercrime gang claimed responsibility for the attack, AerCap, a major aircraft leasing company, confirmed that it was the victim of ransomware.

The company reported the intrusion on January 17 in a Form 6-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. AerCap added that it had alerted law enforcement to the attack as soon as it was discovered and that it was still investigating the event to see if any data had been compromised or exfiltrated.

An emerging ransomware group called “Slug” has claimed responsibility for the incident and listed AerCap on its leak site, despite the company not disclosing any information about the attackers.
