Rapid7 reports ROI for ransomware remains high, while zero-day usage increases

The threat landscape mid-year review from Rapid7 is unsettling. The prevalence of ransomware is still high, there are few basic security defenses in place, security maturity is low, and there is a potentially huge return on investment for crime.

The review is based on the findings of the managed services teams and research teams at Rapid7. It discovered that in H1 2023, there were more than 1500 ransomware victims worldwide.

There were 133 BianLian victims, 526 LockBit victims, 212 Alphv/BlackCat victims, and 178 ClOp victims. Data from Rapid7 incident response, public disclosures, and leak site communications were used to compile the statistics.

Consider these numbers to be conservative. Organizations that successfully and covertly pay the ransom and act as if nothing happened will not be included.
