A Russian cyberespionage group was caught infiltrating a targeted organization’s network through a WiFi connection. They achieved this by first hacking into the systems of an entity located across the street from the victim. The attack, discovered in 2022, was investigated by the cybersecurity firm Volexity, which identified the victim as Organization A. What makes this attack notable is using a new technique that Volexity named the “Nearest Neighbor Attack.”
The attackers devised a plan to compromise the network of a nearby organization, referred to as Organization B. After gaining access to Organization B, the hackers identified a system connected to the network via a wired Ethernet connection. However, this device also had a WiFi adapter. The attackers exploited the adaptor to connect to the WiFi network of Organization A across the street.
