Google stated in a new report published on Tuesday that commercial spyware vendors are responsible for over sixty zero-day vulnerabilities detected in products from Apple, Adobe, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Google since 2016.

The tech giant’s report sheds light on organizations’ business practices that assist governments in infecting devices with spyware. Oppressive regimes are using these commercial spyware vendors’ products and services to target political opponents, journalists, dissidents, and human rights defenders despite their claims that they are only used for lawful surveillance, usually for law enforcement purposes.

Currently, Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) monitors about 40 commercial spyware vendors who create malware and exploits and sell it to governments.
