NSA declares Guidance on Protecting IT-OT Connectivity

In the last week of April 2021, the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) released a cybersecurity advisory that focuses on the security of IT and OT systems. Titled “Stop Malicious Cyber Activity Against Connected Operational Technology”, the NSA’s advisory is addressed to the national security system (NSS), Department of Defense, and defense industrial base enterprise. However, it further states that any industrial organization can utilize the recommendations.

The advisory recommends evaluating risks and improving the connections between IT systems and OT systems. To mitigate the disastrous results surfaced to OT exploitation, NSA advises that OT and IT operators should allow only the most imperative IT-OT connections.
