According to Netscout, a provider of performance and security solutions, malicious actors are increasingly abusing free cloud services, resulting in a significant spike in botnet scanning activity.

Every day, Netscout sees between 10,000 and 20,000 IP addresses conducting internet scans. However, the company saw an increase of over 35,000 devices on December 8 and another spike of 43,000 devices on December 20. The number of source IPs associated with scanning activity has increased dramatically in recent days, peaking on January 5 at nearly 1.3 million.

Netscout reported that the majority of the IP addresses are associated with the United States, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Russia.
